In 2021, the Beckwourth Complex Fire threatened Doyle. Residents faced evacuations and uncertainty, and homes were lost. DFPD volunteers worked to help residents evacuate and defend homes and property when possible. Many were serving the same community where their own families lived; some were working while their families were evacuating.
The human side of the response When immediate firefighting and life-safety priorities allowed, and with homeowner permission, volunteers helped residents protect what they could: pets, family heirlooms, photographs, personal belongings, and small household appliances. The department remembers rescuing plenty of air fryers—a small, human moment amid a deeply difficult time.
Living with the reminders Char marks along roads, burn scars, and dozer lines across the hills remain part of Doyle’s landscape. These visible reminders carry memories of loss, hard work, and neighbors helping one another.
